Shelley Wilson is a visionary, hands-on business executive who directs every facet of Wilson Homecare and Wilson Senior Living. Here, Shelley reflects on her success and the importance of caring for Hawaii’s kupuna.
1. Congratulations on being recognized as the 2013 Pacific Edge Magazine Business Executive of the Year! What impact has this award had on your business?
I’m still humbled to have been honored to receive the Pacific Edge Business Executive award. Receiving the award has positively impacted me both personally and professionally.
2. Since receiving this award, what are some new initiatives that you and your business have undertaken?
I’m happy to say that business is booming. Since receiving the award, Wilson Senior Living opened it’s doors and welcomed the first residents. Wilson Homecare has hired many new employees and continues to expand, meeting the needs of our community.
3. What drives you to “do what you do?”
The number one motivation for me in this business is the people. I’m inspired everyday by the patients we are so fortunate to care for. I’m inspired by the hundreds of care professionals I work with that dedicate their lives to the career of caring for others. I’m truly fortunate to be able to do something that I love so much. It’s really never been a “job” for me, it’s my passion and calling in life.
4. What is one of the best memories you have of running the senior living facility?
The best memory with Wilson Senior Living has been when our first resident moved in. That’s the moment when my dreams came true in creating a beautiful home to care for seniors.
5. What are some future goals that you plan to work toward with Wilson Care Group?
Our team is consistently focused on creating new resources in the community for seniors. We are in the process of exploring additional lines of business in the long term care sector. More to come in 2014!
6. You founded Wilson Homecare at the age of 21. Do you have any advice for other ambitious young women looking to start their own businesses?
The advice that I have for young budding entrepreneurs is that your age and gender have nothing to do with your ability to achieve your goals and ultimately be successful. Being an entrepreneur is a state of mind, your success is driven by passion.
